Last week, ElevenLabs announced that Caine has licensed his voice for their ElevenReader app and licensing platform Iconic Marketplace.
Caine’s Cockney accent from London’s East End has become iconic, distinguishing him from his contemporaries who typically use a Received Pronunciation (RP) “stage accent”.
Caine chose to maintain his working-class roots through his Cockney accent, which he saw as a tool to fight the class system in England, ultimately building his renowned career.
The voice of a person like Caine carries significant social meaning, reflecting culture, identity, and character, a concept known as “enregisterment” in sociolinguistics.
ElevenLabs’ platform allows Caine to control the use of his voice, ensuring he receives credit and compensation while preventing unauthorized clones, potentially setting an industry precedent.
By licensing his voice, Caine also allows AI to commodify not just his speech, but the social and cultural meanings tied to his Cockney accent.
The AI licensing raises questions about the emotional attachment people may develop to a machine delivering content in the voice of a celebrated figure like Caine.
