What parents say about their teen’s AI use

Objective of Research: This Pew Research Center study examines teens’ and parents’ perceptions and experiences with AI chatbots, focusing on their usage in schoolwork, teens’ confidence and awareness of AI, and parents’ attitudes.
Demographics Surveyed: The study surveyed 1,458 U.S. teens and their parents online, specifically targeting parents of teens aged 13 to 17 living with them.
Key Findings on Teens’ Usage: 64% of teens reported using AI chatbots, which is higher than their parents’ estimation of 51%. The survey explored how teens use chatbots for various functions, including schoolwork.
Parents’ Awareness and Comfort Levels: Over 90% of parents are familiar with chatbots. Among those aware, only 51% believe their teen uses them. Parents’ views on appropriate chatbot uses range widely, with 80% okay with chatbot use for search and 18% okay with emotional support.
