The CNN Academy in Abu Dhabi trains 41 students over three weeks in intensive journalism training, focusing on daily assignments, news programming, and broadcast-ready reporting.
The theme for the fifth edition, ‘Community Storytelling,’ aims to create storytellers who reflect UAE values and tell universal stories.
Week One emphasizes unlearning traditional PR skills and relearning journalism fundamentals such as newsworthiness based on truth, context, and public interest.
Week Two involves hands-on skills training in ethical frameworks, interviewing techniques, video editing, on-camera reporting, and fact-checking.
Week Three is dedicated to ‘Simulation Week’ through the fictional ‘Brynania,’ simulating a crisis environment to test students under pressure while ensuring ethical reporting.
Departing advice to future students includes making applications authentic, thoroughly understanding provided resources, networking extensively, and evaluating the impact of storytelling.
The Academy has trained 165 students since its inception in 2021, upskilling regional storytellers to meet global reporting standards.
