- Elon Musk’s SpaceX has proposed building a network containing 100 times the current number of satellites in orbit, with plans to launch up to one million satellites.
- The main objective of this satellite network is to create an “orbital data center” that will use solar power to provide computing capacity for artificial intelligence.
- According to SpaceX’s filing with the FCC, this data center will be an efficient solution to meet the increasing demand for AI computing power, thanks to its use of solar energy and low operating costs.
- Despite the proposed ambitious plan, the FCC is likely to limit the number requested by SpaceX, as it has done previously, most recently approving the addition of 15,000 Starlink satellites after SpaceX’s initial application for nearly 30,000 in 2020.
- To put the requested number of satellites in context, SpaceX recently launched its 11,000th Starlink satellite, and there are currently approximately 9,600 operational satellites orbiting Earth.
