Dario Amodei, CEO of AI startup Anthropic, warns that the rapid advancement of AI technology is about to undergo an inevitable and turbulent phase that will test humanity as a species.
Amodei argues that powerful AI systems, capable of outperforming humans in general intelligence tasks, could emerge within one to two years.
His essay, titled “The adolescence of technology,” emphasizes the urgent need for global action on AI safety due to the potential risks associated with such advancements.
Amodei is concerned about the lack of maturity in the current social, political, and technological systems in handling such powerful AI.
He highlights ethical issues, pointing out AI companies’ negligence, such as the creation of sexualized deepfakes, especially involving children.
Despite the challenges, Amodei remains optimistic that with decisive and careful action, humanity can overcome the risks and achieve a better future through AI.
Anthropic is collaborating with the UK government to develop AI assistants to support public services including jobseeker support.
Amodei emphasized that the economic benefits of AI, while promising, could overshadow necessary regulatory measures and could lead to significant societal challenges if not managed properly.
