Pittsburgh researchers developing lifesaving robot “dogs”

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are developing robot “dogs” designed to assist in dangerous situations where humans cannot safely operate, positioning Pittsburgh as a major tech hub.
Named Spotless, these robot dogs can conduct search and rescue operations more effectively by identifying hazards through air sampling (sniffing) and assessing individuals’ conditions, including injuries and heart rates.
During simulations, Spotless has demonstrated its ability to expedite search and rescue missions by quickly identifying the presence of gases and the number of casualties, tasks that would otherwise take longer for human medics.
The Defense Department has heavily invested in artificial intelligence and robotics research at Carnegie Mellon, contributing to the university’s progression as a leader in tech innovation.
After completing its tasks, Spotless is rewarded with a new battery charge, analogous to receiving a treat, to prepare it for the next mission.
