Pentagon Names Cameron Stanley Next AI Chief – MeriTalk

Cameron Stanley is appointed as the Pentagon’s next Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO).
The appointment was announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Jan. 12 at SpaceX headquarters in Texas.
Stanley’s new position is critical as the Defense Department (DOD) invests heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) to innovate both combat and administrative functions.
Stanley formerly served as Amazon Web Services’ national security digital transformation lead.
He has extensive experience within the DOD, including roles in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security and AI development through Project Maven.
Stanley succeeds Dr. Douglas Matty, who led the CDAO office from April to December 2025, and Andrew Mapes, who has been acting CDAO since Matty’s departure.
Dr. Douglas Matty has transitioned to a new role as the DOD’s chief technologist starting in December 2025.
