Malaysia and Indonesia have become the first countries to block Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, due to misuse for generating sexually explicit and non-consensual images.
Authorities argue that the chatbot, developed by xAI and accessible on Musk’s X platform, lacks adequate safeguards to prevent the production and spread of fake pornographic content, including scenarios involving women and minors.
The actions taken reflect a broader global concern about the ability of generative AI tools to produce realistic content while current controls fail to curb their misuse.
Indonesian regulators cited serious violations of human rights, dignity, and safety as reasons for blocking Grok access, emphasizing their efforts to protect individuals, especially women and children.
Malaysia imposed a temporary restriction on Grok, stating misuse includes the creation of obscene and non-consensual manipulated images and highlighting the need for stronger regulatory measures.
Grok, launched in 2023, added an image generator including an option to create adult content, prompting backlash globally including in Europe, Britain, and India.
Despite implementing measures to limit image generation and editing to premium users, critics argue that these actions do not fully address the underlying issues of Grok’s misuse.
